In addition to the date and mint marks which are customary on western civilisation coinage, most coins manufactured by

the French mints contain two or three small Marks or Differents as the French call them. These privy marks represent the man

responsible for the dies which struck the coins. For the period 1958-74 the Engraver General's Privy Mark was an Owl.
